The Madera Canyon, a major "hot spot" for birding in North America is just a twenty minute drive from our facility. There are numerous hiking trails to explore and sturdy hikers can travel more than 9,300 feet to the top of Mt. Wrightson. Regardless of experience- an eager beginner or seasoned pro, a visit to the canyon will be rewarding any day of the year. Picnic tables are available and you are almost certian to see a variety of hummingbird species. Paved hiking trails are available for the physically challenged.

The Cactus Wren [the state bird of Arizona] can be seen in the canyon year-round. Another highly visible resident is the noisy Acord Woodpecker. The Northern Flicker and Ladderbacked are amond the others seen in a the canyon. On occasion, the rare Elegant Trogon may be spotted.

The Patagonia-Sonoita Creek Sanctuary, managed by the Nature Conservancy is also an excellent Birding location and makes for an excellent day trip.
