There
is something for everyone in Southern Arizona, and Green Valley is the ideal central
location to experience the numerous historical, cultural, natural, and contemporary
destinations that abound just minutes away.
San
Xavier Mission:

The "White Dove of the Desert". Considered
by many the finest example of Spanish mission architecture in the U.S. Take I-19
North to Valencia Road, west to Mission Road, south to San Xavier Road.
Madera
Canyon:

In the Santa Ritas about 25 miles east of Green Valley.
The canyon is home to many plants and animals rare in the U.S. One of America's
birdwatching "Hot Spots". Picnic areas and campgrounds. Take Continental
Road east, turn right on Madera Canyon Road.
Duval
Mine:

Tour a local working copper mine. Advance reservations necessary.
No children under 12. North on La Canada Drive, left on Duval Mine Road, 7 miles
west, follow signs.
Nogales,
Old Mexico:

Visit the "sister" cities of Nogales, Sonora, Mexico, and Nogales, Arizona.
Mexican visitor pass unnecessary within 15 miles of the border. We suggest parking
on the Arizona side and walking across the border. 40 miles south of Green Valley
on I-19.
Tubac:

Oldest European settlement in Arizona; today a thriving
arts and crafts village. Galleries, shops (many closed on Mondays). 15 miles south
of Green Valley on I-19.
Tumacacori
Mission:

Just south of Tubac on I-19. Church standing today was built
in the 1800's. Adjoining museum contains models of the original mission and village.
Patagonia
Lake:

One of Arizona's newest recreational lakes, fishing and
boating facilities. Stop in the town of Patagonia and visit the Museum of the
Horse. I-19 South to Nogales; Highway 82 northeast to Patagonia and follow the
signs. 60 miles from Green Valley.
Old
Tucson:

Famous movie location and studio; family fun park. Rides,
studio tours, etc. North on I-19 to Ajo Way exit, west to Kinney Road, north to
Old Tucson. 30 miles from Green Valley. Admission fee.
Arizona-Sonora
Desert Museum:

Living animals and plants of the Sonora Desert region. Many
unique exhibits, indoor and outdoor. On Kinney Road, north of Old Tucson (see
directions from Green Valley above). Admission fee.
Saguaro
National Monument:

63,000 acres of magnificent stands of saguaro cactus. Rincon
Mountain Section: monument headquarters, exhibits, 9-mile circular drive, picnicking.
On the Old Spanish Trail, east of Tucson. Tucson Mountain Section: Information
center, picnicking, North on Kinney Road, past Old Tucson and Desert Museum (see
directions under Old Tucson listing above). Admission Fee.
Pima
Air Museum:

Outdoor display covering 80 years of aviation history. Take
I-19 North to I-10 East to Wilmot Road exit, north two miles. Admission fee.
Colossal
Cave:

Possible the world's largest dry limestone cavern. Safe,
easy to take tours. Take I-19 North to I-10 East to Vail exit, north to cave.
50 miles from Green Valley. Admission fee.
Tombstone:

"The town too tough to die!" Historic silver boomtown.
Visit Boothill Cemetery, O.K. Corral, museums. 90 miles from Green Valley. Take
I-19 North to I-10 East to Rte. 80, south to Tombstone.
Bisbee:

Rustic, turn-of-the-century town, home of Lavender Pit Mine,
one of the world's largest open-pit copper mines. 24 miles south of Tombstone
on Route 80 (see directions above).
Kitt
Peak National Observatory:

Established in 1958 as the country's first national observatory.
Site of the Mayall 158" telescope and McMath Solar Telescope. Open to the
public. No admission fee. On the Papago Indian Reservation. I-19 North to Ajo
Way exit, then Highway 86 west to Kitt Peak turnoff. 75 miles from Green Valley.
